The Ultimate Colorado Adventure: 6 Days of Mountains, Small Towns & Unforgettable Experiences
Colorado has a way of making every day feel like an adventure. From historic mining towns and scenic mountain passes to fly fishing, ATV rides, and charming downtowns, this six-day itinerary combines the perfect mix of outdoor adventure, local food, and mountain-town charm.
If you’re planning a Colorado getaway with friends, here’s exactly how we spent our week exploring the Rockies.
Day 1: Arrive in Denver & Explore Stanley Marketplace
After landing in Denver, we skipped heading straight to the mountains and spent the afternoon exploring Stanley Marketplace in Aurora. This former aviation hangar has been transformed into a vibrant food hall and shopping destination filled with local restaurants, boutiques, and entertainment. We even squeezed in an indoor golf session at The Local Drive before hitting the road.
For dinner, we made our way to the iconic Buckhorn Exchange, Denver’s oldest restaurant. Known for its Wild West history and unique game meats, it’s a Colorado institution and a fun way to kick off your trip. Highly recommend ordering the bison prime rib or elk tenderloin. If you are feeling really adventurous, order the Rocky Mountain oysters.

Day 2: ATV Adventures in Leadville & Sunset in Vail
Nothing says Colorado adventure quite like exploring the mountains by UTV. We started our morning in Leadville, the highest incorporated city in North America, with a guided ATV tour through alpine landscapes, historic mining areas, and breathtaking mountain scenery. We took our tour with Leadville ATV Tours, and I highly recommend them. It was about a 2 hour tour which took us through endless trails in an enclosed UTV for all mountain weather equipped with heat, windows, and a bluetooth stereo/radio. We ended up stopping a several times to get some photos and change drivers if desired.
After getting our adrenaline fix, we went back to the Airbnb to shower and get ready for an afternoon in Vail. The free mountain air, walkable village, and scenic gondola rides make Vail one of Colorado’s most beautiful destinations year-round.
My Vail Recommendations:
Gondola One - Enjoy breathtaking views while the gondola whisks you up above 10,000ft. If you have time, hike some of the mountain trails before taking the gondola back down. Summer Gondola Ride
Vail and Lionshead Villages - Wander the European-inspired, cobblestone streets lined with boutiques, gear shops, and galleries. Enjoy a cocktail or cold beer on the patio.
Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater: Enjoy outdoor live concerts, performances, or festivals during the summer and fall.
After riding Gondola One up to mid mountain, we stopped to have a beer on the patio of Pepi’s Bar and Restaurant. We made quick stop into The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory before heading to dinner at Alpenrose for an authentic German meal and drinks in the Biergarten. Don’t forget to order one of their homemade desserts. We took ours to-go since we were so full from schnitzel.
Day 3: Discovering Golden, Colorado
The charming town of Golden is often overshadowed by Denver, but it quickly became one of our favorite stops. We had lunch at The Golden Mill, a unique food hall featuring self-pour taps, multiple food vendors, and incredible views of Clear Creek. During the summer, this area is bustling with people soaking up the sun and rafting down the creek. If beer isn’t your thing, visit the small downtown and check out some of the local boutiques and grab a bite to eat. Golden perfectly blends Colorado’s outdoor culture with small town charm, making it a must visit destination.

On our way back to the Airbnb, we stopped for dinner at Cabin Creek Brewing. Its about halfway from Golden to Frisco and it has breathtaking views the creek surrounded by the Rocky Mountains.
Day 4: Choose your own adventure kind of day
The guys spent the day fly fishing with local guides, casting lines in some of Colorado’s famous trout waters surrounded by incredible mountain scenery. I used Mile High Angler for this full day excursion and highly recommend this company and Captain Chris, owner and operator. He made the booking process so easy and was happy to explain the process of the day as well as answer any questions by the guys. Unfortunately, he was not available for the day, but he provided the best guides, Floyd and Ron to take care of the boys. They spend the day learning to cast a fly fishing rod on public land and everyone caught a number of good size trout to brag about. In Colorado, it is state law to catch and release. The guys came home exhausted but thrilled to have spent the day in nature.
Meanwhile, the girls headed south to experience the Royal Gorge Route Railroad. The scenic train ride follows the Arkansas River through dramatic canyon walls and includes lunch and drinks onboard. The entire experience was fantastic from check in, to service on the train, and a menu with plenty of options. We chose to sit in the Vista Dome to give us the full experience from gorge to sky. They have several open air cars to go out and enjoy the panoramic views. The train stops along the river for several minutes which is a great time for photos before heading back to the station. The tour takes about 2 hours and worth it for the view. They have several tours a day with an evening tour during the summer and holiday tours for Christmas. This was a highlight of my trip and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Day 5: Exploring Breckenridge
Breckenridge combines outdoor adventure with one of the most charming downtown areas in Colorado. Our day began with Ridden. a guided fat-tire bike tour through the heart of Breckenridge and its creekside trails. Our tour guide, Annie, was full of interesting facts and history and included stopping at Breckenridge Distillery for a tasting and Broken Compass Brewery to enjoy a nice cold beer (and pet dogs). The ride offered incredible views and was a great way to experience Breckenridge beyond Main Street.
Afterward, we spent the afternoon exploring downtown favorites including:

Higgles Ice Cream for a classic root beer float
RMU for cocktails
Motherloaded Tavern for outdoor games and comfort food
Gold Pan Saloon for a drink at the oldest bar in Breckenridge

No trip to Breckenridge would be complete without riding the Gold Runner Coaster or taking the free BreckConnect Gondola for panoramic mountain views. We were not able to experience these during this trip, but it will be on our list to do next time we visit.
We wrapped up our final evening with dinner at Blue Stag Saloon before one last stroll through town. Enjoy dishes like venison meatloaf, elk stroganoff, and rainbow trout.
Day 6: Departure Day
Like all great trips, this Colorado adventure came to an end far too quickly.
Our last stop on the way back into Denver was to visit Lookout Mountain overlooking the epics views of the city of Golden to the East and the Rocky Mountain range to the West. While you are there, stop in and tour the Buffalo Bill Museum and grave site. Entry fee is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $1 for kids ages 6-17, and free for kids under 6. Give yourself about an hour to get through the museum before heading to Buffalo Bills final resting place with incredible views. Once you get up there, you will understand why he chose that grave site.
